The HP Envy x360 15m-bq121dx was released in 2017 and has an AMD Ryzen 5 2500U CPU with an integrated Radeon Vega 8 GPU, 8GB of RAM and a 1080p touchscreen display. It can be upgraded to have 16GB of RAM, an NVMe SSD and a SATA SSD for faster system speeds.

Installation

This laptop has Secure Boot enabled by default. To start the installer you need to disable it in the UEFI. Then you can just boot the installer in UEFI mode and just install like a normal UEFI system. You can start using Secure Boot in Linux via Unified Extensible Firmware Interface/Secure Boot.

Battery and power management

Comes with a 55.8Wh battery, with TLP enabled, yields about 3 hours of battery life under light usage, like watching YouTube in Full HD and doing light office work. Under heavy load, like gaming, battery life lasts up to 1 hour.

Audio

The Bang & Olufsen top soundbar works out of the box and it requires no configuration. The volume rocker also works correctly.

Storage

Built-in NVMe drive works with advertised speed. Blockdevices are located at /dev/nvme0n1p*.

Orientation sensor

You currently need to install iio-sensor-proxy and reboot to make the orientation sensor work. If you are using GNOME, you will need to additionally install gnome-shell-extension-screen-autorotateAUR.

Accessibility

Note Blind users may need to request the help of a sighted person to change firmware settings.

The laptop comes with the standard UEFI firmware setup.

The laptop comes with backlit keys, working out of the box.

The mute LED button does not work and currently has no working solution.

Firmware

System Firmware and UEFI dbx fields can be updated and are supported by fwupd.

Troubleshooting

Freezes

On some particular model of motherboards, the laptop freezes randomly (e.g. when surfing on Youtube). A workaround is to set these kernel parameters: idle=nomwait rcu_nocbs=0-7.

Touchscreen

When using dual booting with Windows, the journalctl may show: IRQ 7: nobody cared. and may make the touchscreen and/or the AMD sensors not work properly. One common fix is to add to the kernel parameters noirqdebug. Adding this parameter use more CPU than usual, consumes more energy and may break suspend and shutdown.

This is currently an active bug that has not been solved yet. For more information follow this thread on Bugzilla.

A workaround instead of using the noirqdebug flag, you can log in into Windows, hibernate and then log in into Linux.
